My Number One Mistake From College

September 15, 2014 / Leave a Comment

I studied what I thought would make me money someday without knowing what types of jobs were REALLY out there!

I grew up very poor.  My mom was a bartender living on tips, and my dad was always in between  beat sales jobs (think Al Bundy-shoes, cars, mobile homes).   I wanted one thing growing up: financial stability!

So I majored in finance, and a few months before I graduated the financial world came crumbling down due to the 9-11 attacks.  What a wake up call.  The attacks effected EVERYTHING in the financial world.  All of my potential internships vanished, and the world really felt like it changed over night!

It took me nearly a decade to figure out how to get a real world job.  My major didn't really teach me any SPECIFIC job ready skills that were any different from any other college graduate.  I've always been awkward and dorky, so my social skills didn't get me anywhere either.  I needed job specific skills.

After working over a dozen dead end jobs, I went back to school 8 years after I graduated to get my teaching license. Say what you will but being a teacher is a real job.  It is professional and has plenty of room for growth and opportunities.  I love it, and I wish back in the day, I could have whispered to my former self to just go with my passion.  (it would have been writing or a professional that actually helps people!).

So that is my advice to anyone out there reading this!  Pursue YOUR passion.  Not your mom or dad's... not what you think will make you money or give you status. Find your flow and do what you love.  Time is so precious!
