Birthdays and Science Fairs

It was a great 33rd birthday.  When I came to school, there were about 5 kids hiding in the front door all so eager to see me, and they shouted "Happy Birthday!"   That was the greatest feeling ever.   I decided for my birthday today to celebrate all the "summer" birthdays in class.   I give each kid a pack of gum and a handwritten card.  Most teachers probably think it's crazy to give away a whole pack of gum, but to a kid, it's the best present in the world:  it is a scandalous and forbidden treat!   Also, it's really cheap!  I have found that I can get a lot of bribing power out of one stick of gum.  The older teachers in the building hate my policy on gum, but I haven't had a kid misuse the privilege yet, so oh well.  Maybe I too will be a gum miser someday, but until then, VIVA LA GUM!

So here I am...
I wore my favorite new dress. It had skulls on it and dice, a little risky for 5th grade, but it was my birthday and I paired it with some cute red tennis shoes.  Say hello to my dog, Obi Wan!

My husband had to work tonight, so I just stayed at home, watched Say Anything, and made Science Fair Certificates for my students!  I held a science fair last week and my 5th graders went to town!  They did ALL of the work at home, and they made these amazing display boards.  I just gave them a brief overview of the "categories" from the scientific method to add and whatnot.. and they really did amazing.

I looked all over TPT for Science fair awards, and I couldn't find any that fit what I wanted, so I made my own: I think I will try to make them editable and sell them on TPT eventually.  Tonight though, I had 22 certificates to make for my own class.  (what a birthday party huh?).

Here were some questions that my students thought up for the science fair:
Which fruit floats the best?
What brand of lemon lime soda loses its carbonation the fastest?
Which candle brand burns the longest?
Can you tell the difference between the various types of milk with your nose plugged?
How would highlighters effect various types of liquid?
Do video games make you score lower on IQ tests?
Which brand of gum loses its flavor fastest?
What brand of basketball bounces the highest?

Those are just a sample.  Some kids just wanted to do research on odd topics like optical illusions and one kid actually made an outdoor oven (totally cool).

I just couldn't believe all the work these students put in at the END OF THE YEAR!  For no grades at all.
I had an AMAZING class this year!  I was truly blessed.

2.5 Days left.  I am happy and sad at the same time.

Goodnight, ,

The Birthday Teacher
