Whimsical writing tip #1: Ask the student to explain the assignment in his or her own words. Many teachers utilize this tip after explaining directions to a student, but how often do we use this tip before they start writing? Teachers know that oftentimes, this "explaining to a partner" trick clears up a lot of misconceptions. I believe that students learn more from each other than a *yack yack* teacher.
So for those students with writer's block saying "I just can't think of anything to write", maybe have them explain the writing prompt to someone else. A conversation can cure even the worst blockage.
Thank you for reading about this vital tip!
