Paper Airplanes are Fun

Whoosh. This week has been exhausting.  At my school, we cut off the grading period a full week and half in advance of the last day of school. Also many of the "special" classes ended. Meaning that we teachers are not getting any breaks nor are we giving kids any "graded" assignments.

I tried to have fun today, but the kids were bouncing off the walls.  I started the day out with some "left over absentee science fair projects.  Then, it was all about this book:

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium Paper Airplane Designs!

The kids went wild over these books.  I found them on ebay for $25.00/for 30 books.  I figured it was a great investment for my tweens for many years to come!

So they built paper airplanes and then we went outside and they had a little airplane competition.  They were so good at measuring the distance of their flights.  Another teacher was nice enough to loan us a looooong measuring tape and a measuring wheel.  IT was nice seeing the kids convert the measurements into decimals.  I have some really bright kids!

Airplanes kept us busy until after lunch when I handed out the Science Fair Awards. The kids were anxious to get them.  I bought a lot of prizes, but I was dismayed that a lot of the kids turned their noses up at them.  I am thinking of doing away with prizes next year... as a new teacher it is hard coming up with rewards.  I tried the intrinsic award approach and I just don't have a knack for it yet.  Maybe next year.

Other good stuff:
I scored a major pile of science books from a retiring teacher!  At least 50 high quality reads!
Tomorrow we are doing a "Survivor" style competition for 1/2 of the day.  I have no idea what it will be like.
I cleaned out underneath my desk.  Sometimes weird things get under there!
I had my whole class sign my yearbook, and there were some sweet and not so sweet notes in it.
*But mostly sweet!*
WE got a free catered lunch from a local Mexican restaurant. I am eating the Paleo diet, but I still found a delicious green salad with fruit to munch on!  So thankful for a free lunch.

Personal News:
I have sold 18 things on TPT since I opened my store on Memorial Day Weekend. I am so grateful and happy for the sales!  I also have 4 fans and 5 good ratings.
Slowly but surely, I know I will make my goals this year.
I came up with an amazing lesson idea on the way home.  So excited to start on it.
I have lost 11 lbs since starting the Paleo Diet a few weeks ago.  I feel so happy about this!
I get to celebrate a late bday with my parents this weekend (they live 200 miles away).
I am going to Virginia City, NV on my trip:
Here's a picture of me there- many years ago!

I am also thrilled to see what new movies are out, so I can "catch" up on some.  (there's a tiny movie theater in the town I work with scratchy orange chairs and no stadium seating, ho hum).

Oh and AND!!!   Next Sunday is my first  WEDDING Anniversary with my husband!  Crazy.
He's pretty much the best thing since sliced bread.  :)

Happy Tuesday Everyone!

Jess
