With the common core standards and state standards and all the pressures of standardized tests, I think we forget the power we have as teachers to spread our passions to our students. Here are some things that I LOVE and I try to incorporate into my yearly lessons:
1. Traveling- I teach a lot of geography and history of the 50 states. Here I can share my travels and adventures with my students. Someday, I hope to share the whole world with them!
2. Photography- I consider myself an amateur photographer (who isn't though?). Sometimes, I bring in my photos for students as "writing prompts". Every year I take a professional photo of them, and I photoshop their pictures into funny things like billboards and magazine covers. I print the pictures out as Christmas gifts, and it is always a big hit.
3. Writing- I love writing! I especially love writing letters. There are so many ways I can teach students about my love. I encourage them to write (a lot) daily in a writer's notebook. I also have them write letters to each other, their parents, historical figures and staff members at school. They love this form of communication, and so do I!
4. Comic Books! I've always been a superhero nerd. I love everything about comic books- the illustrations, the story lines, the glossy paper, even the little ads in the back. I love incorporating my favorite superhero into my daily lessons. (Batman).
5. Lastly, I love nearly all types of music. From classical piano to punk rock to soda fountain 50's pop. I love it all. I play music throughout the day, and I frequently encourage students to make up their own songs and raps in the name of learning!
So how do you incorporate your passions in your job?
Take care friends!
